Moodle is the Trust’s virtual learning environment or VLE. It is one of the online platforms with which you will engage during your time studying with us. Others include MyTAP, the student record system, as well as various Library platforms such as the reading lists and Box of Broadcasts. MyTAP holds your information as a registered student. It uses a unique username and password that you create when you first apply to study at the Trust. In MyTAP you will find information about your fee payments, your grades and so on. Moodle and the Library platforms relate your learning experience. They both use Shibboleth as an authentication platform. Your Shibboleth account is created using data drawn from MyTAP authentication, meaning that when you log into Moodle, the platform checks with Shibboleth to see if you have a valid account. If you do, Shibboleth authorizes your entry into Moodle. So remember the login details you use for MyTAP will be different to those you use for Moodle and the Library resources. At the start of the new academic year, you will receive two automated emails. The first comes from Shibboleth and contains your username (usually an abbreviation of your name) and a link to your password. The second comes from MyTAP and contains your enrolment key and instructions for logging into Moodle using the Shibboleth details you previously set up. Please follow these instructions precisely. You can find links to Moodle and MyTAP at the bottom of every web page on the Tavistock and Portman website. The first thing to note about Moodle is that it is not a website, although it may look like one. This means you will not be able to move through the platform as you would through the BBC website for example. Your access is restricted to certain pages that relate to your course, such as the page where you submit your assignments throughout the year. You are added to these pages based on the information or permissions drawn from MyTAP. You log into Moodle through the left-hand Shibboleth option of the login page. Once you have entered your Shibboleth username and password on the next screen, you will be taken to the Moodle landing page. You’ll see this every time you log in. The landing page consists of a number of tabs, tiles, images and so on. It may look a little confusing until you get used to it. Let’s break it down a little now. Most navigation cues are duplicated on this page, giving you multiple ways to access the content you want. For example, there are two options for accessing the Student Resources page. You’ll see your name and profile image (if you’ve uploaded one) at the top right of each Moodle page. Click on your name to access your dashboard, profile, gradebook and so on. You’ll also find the contact details for the TEL team here. Please take the time to move through the image carousel. This is regularly updated. You’ll find news about upcoming events and other useful information. Probably the important links are those to My Courses. These links will take you to a list of all the pages that are relevant to your course. Make sure the course overview pod is set on Courses rather than Timeline. Note also that once past the landing page, you can access My Courses using the navigation block on the left. Click on a course to access that page. On the page, click on a resource or activity. You can return to the front of the course page or even the landing page by using the breadcrumb trail at the top. Back at the landing page now, the bottom left area contains some fixed links to useful information that are not based on your enrollment permissions. The middle section contains messages that have been posted to the Moodle site-wide discussion forum by TEL or the Library. These posts are automatically emailed to all Moodle account holders. It is possible to opt out of receiving these emailed posts. The final section is another way of reaching My Courses.
