You can see it on this incredible clip of 200 kilos of confetti being blasted at Ed Sheeran on the UK’s X Factor. Now, if you already understand compression, you can pick another video. Everyone else: let’s talk bitrate. I’m not actually in Norway, by the way, if that wasn’t obvious. I could have tried to find some actual snow or bought a load of confetti, but this way I can test things with carefully-controlled digital…

6 Creative Ways People Used to Navigate the Oceans

It’s pretty hard to get lost these days, no matter where you are in the world. All you have to do is fire up your favorite navigation app and you’re good. Even ships in the middle of the ocean have GPS. But back before all that technology existed, getting lost was a real danger, especially at sea. To the untrained eye, the ocean looks a whole lot like wet and nothing else. So people around the world independently came up with techniques for squeezing all of the information they could out of what they could see at sea. Lots of them hit on the usefulness of the stars to tell…

Jordan Peterson – A Good Father Helps You to Become Your Best Self

What kind of relationship do you have with your father? Your real father. It’s often ambivalent, because there’s an element of him that encouraged you, hopefully, because without that encouragement, man, the world is a dismal place. It’s very difficult to be a courageous person, unless you have your father, in body and spirit, behind you. It’s very demoralising. It really kills people not to have their mother. They just don’t recover from that. I think people can recover from a fragmented father-relationship, but it’s the next worst thing. Because if your father rejects you, or doesn’t form a relationship with you, it’s as if the spirit of civilisation has…

Study: Public startups boom under JOBS Act – UB School of Management

[MICHAEL DAMBRA] Since the early 2000s, there’s been a huge drop in IPO volume. So Congress was incentivized to increase IPO frequency. And so bringing together some some experts they come up with these different provisions to spur IPO growth. Small firm IPO growth in the hopes that it would lead to more job growth. The JOBS Act was released in April 2012 and they tried to spur IPOs through two ways. One was reducing the cost of going public. The second part that we focused our papers on are these de-risking provisions. And so the JOBS Act actually changed the process of firms going public. They could actually communicate…
